Stay safe this summer

When you are out and about, remember to wear a mask, scan in, and have My Vaccine Pass ready so that we can make summer unstoppable.

Have a plan before you travel

As Kiwis travel around the country this summer we may see an increase in COVID-19 in our communities.

Some people may get COVID-19, even if vaccinated and following the rules. Vaccinated people are less likely to develop serious illness and less likely to be hospitalised.

If you are heading away over summer, it is important you and your whānau have a plan for what you will do if anyone tests positive for COVID-19.

Testing services are open over summer

Testing services will be available throughout the Christmas, New Year and the holiday period.

If you need to get a test, call Healthline or check Healthpoint for details of the nearest testing service, including opening hours.

Hosting gatherings for friends and whānau

If you are hosting or inviting people into your home here are some tips to keep everyone safe.

  • Encourage guests to wash and dry their hands or to sanitise their hands when they arrive, and practice good hygiene. If possible, have some hand sanitiser available for everyone to use.
  • Consider having windows or doors open to provide ventilation. If the weather is suitable, you could host your event outdoors.
  • Try to avoid shared utensils and limit the number of people preparing, handling and serving food.
  • Keep a note of all the people who visit you at home, or at your holiday destination. You can create your own QR code and encourage those who visit to scan in with the NZ COVID Tracer app.

Follow the advice for holding gatherings at Red and Orange:

If you are unwell at home

If you are unwell or have been exposed to a COVID-19 case, contact Healthline for advice and to arrange a test immediately.

It might be tempting to continue with your Christmas plans, but you play an important role in protecting others from becoming unwell, including from COVID-19, by limiting their exposure to anyone who is sick.

While you are unwell or waiting for a negative test result:

  • stay at home
  • do not travel
  • do not take part in events, activities, or socialising
  • do not invite people over or host events.
