My Vaccine Pass

My Vaccine Pass is an official record of your COVID-19 vaccination status for use in Aotearoa New Zealand.

About My Vaccine Pass

My Vaccine Pass is an official record of your COVID-19 vaccination status for use within Aotearoa New Zealand.

It is the only valid document that can be used to access events or venues that require proof of your vaccination status.

Businesses cannot accept a purple vaccination card, vaccination confirmation letter or exemption card as proof of your vaccination status.

Who can get a My Vaccine Pass

You can request a My Vaccine Pass if you are aged 12 or over and:

  • have had 2 doses of the Pfizer or AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine in New Zealand, or
  • been vaccinated overseas with an approved vaccine, or
  • have a medical exemption.

Your My Vaccine Pass will include your name, date of birth and a QR code. You can save it on a digital device, like your phone, or print a physical copy.

It will expire 6 months from the date of issue, or on 1 June 2022, whichever comes sooner. We have set an expiry date to allow flexibility in how we respond to the changing nature of the pandemic.

Who does not need a My Vaccine Pass

People under the age of 12 years and 3 months are not required to show proof of vaccination.

When you need a My Vaccine Pass

You may need to show your My Vaccine Pass to access certain events and venues operating under the COVID-19 Protection Framework (traffic lights). These could include:

  • events
  • hospitality
  • close-proximity businesses, such as hairdressers and gyms
  • sport
  • faith-based gatherings.

You will not need to show proof of vaccination to access basic needs services like:

  • supermarkets
  • pharmacies
  • health and disability services
  • petrol stations
  • public transport — for example, buses, trains and commuter ferries
  • schools and early learning service providers
  • housing and housing support services.

How to get a My Vaccine Pass

There are 3 ways to get your My Vaccine Pass — online through My Covid Record, over the phone, and in person at a participating vaccination site.

If you do not have a unique email address or valid ID, you can get your pass over the phone or at a participating vaccination site.

Find your NHI number

A National Health Index (NHI) number is a unique number that is given to each person using health and disability support services in New Zealand.

You can find your NHI number on:

  • a prescription or prescription receipt, a prescription medicine label
  • a hospital letter
  • an x-ray or test result
  • your patient portal (ManageMyHealth).

Save a pass to your phone or print it out

Once your pass has been emailed to you, it gives you the option to save it to your phone:

  • For Apple, click 'Add to Apple Wallet'
  • For Android, click 'Save to phone'

Another way to save the pass to your phone is to take a screenshot of the QR code when you open the PDF in your email. You can save this to your phone. Make sure it is not blurry or pixelated and there is blank space around the edges. It is helpful if your name can be seen in the screenshot.

If you would prefer to have a physical copy of your pass, download and print the PDF attachment in the email. When printing, use the highest quality setting on your printer to ensure the QR code is clear so it can be scanned easily when entering venues.

How passes are checked

Businesses may scan the QR code on your My Vaccine Pass with the NZ Pass Verifier app. This app will confirm your vaccination status for the business. You may also be asked to show ID. It will not store your data or show any information other than your name and date of birth.

Your privacy

When a business or organisation uses the app to scan your My Vaccine Pass, it will show a green tick — this confirms it is a valid pass.

It also shows your name and date of birth. The verifier can request to see your ID to check it matches the details on the app.

It is an offence for a business to sell the details from the My Vaccine Pass, or use the details for purposes outside the COVID-19 response.

Any personal information collected — for example, that you have been verified — remains subject to the protections in the Privacy Act 2020.

About the NZ Pass Verifier app

The NZ Pass Verifier is a free app that businesses and organisations can use to help stop the spread of COVID-19 and keep their community safe.

At certain traffic light settings, businesses and organisations are encouraged to use the app to check customers' My Vaccine Pass.

Requirements will depend on the sector and the choices the business or organisation has made about how they will operate under the traffic light system.

If you need technical help with the NZ Pass Verifier app, call the Ministry of Health on 0800 800 606.

Advice for businesses about My Vaccine Pass

My Vaccine Pass is the only valid document that can be used to access events or venues requiring proof of vaccination status.

All My Vaccine Passes should be visually checked to allow access. A reasonable number should also be scanned using the NZ Pass Verifier app to allow access. You may also check details by requesting ID (for example, driver licence).

If you are unsure whether someone has a Ministry of Health-issued medical exemption or is fully vaccinated, scan their My Vaccine Pass to check they meet the requirements to enter your premises. The NZ Pass Verifier app will show a green tick.

The Ministry of Health is the only agency authorised to provide a medical exemption from getting vaccinated. A person who has a medical exemption can get a My Vaccine Pass, which when scanned will show a green tick — the same as all passes.
